Shift Athirapally Project to Munnamkadavu, Kasaragod

Athirapally project is a great Threat to Rainforest Sorrounding it. Then why can'nt it shift to Kasaragod, where there is no National Park and 22% of the geographical area is 'waste land'. If dam is shifted to kasaragod, it will create more area for afforestation (After relocating the people for dam purpose). we can create a wild life sanctuary here. Why some polititians so much interested in Athirapally or new dam in Mullaperiyar? Because they all want a new dam for their district. There are 12 rivers in kasaragod but no any dam. political Leaders from our district should answer it. Our MLAs and MPs should have a strong passion for our district and should pressure south keralite dominated secretariate to build new dams in Kasaragod and stop neglecting this district anymore. It also solve water shortage problem for this district.

Kasaragod interstate Raod Project is a threat to Karnataka wildlife

The Interstate Raods like Panathur-Bhagamandala, Pulingom- Bhagamandala, Sullya-Bandadukka raods are Greatest Threats to kasaragod and Karnataka wildlife. Many migrants from south kerala who dont have any faith in sacred groves, biodiversity or unaware of the climate change supports for this road. This road may be used by timber, spirit, sand smugglers, poachers and those seeking evade sale tax. Some politians are also supporting this road for 'development'. Another major threats are Cheemeni Thermal Power Plant and Petrochemicals coming up in the district. Environmentalist should concentrate for setting up a wildlife sanctuary in Ranipuram instead of protesting against power plant.

Kerala Forest Ministers failed to declare a wildlife sanctuary in kasaragod District

It is well known that wild animal are daily hunted in the reserved forests of kasaragod district. Reserved forests of panathady and adjoining forests are immedatly decalred as Ranipuram Wildlife sanctaury for permanet poaching/hunting solution. Our Ruling and Previous Minister failed to do so. It is also noted that wild animals such as pigs, squirrels, civets are killed for performing communty rituals such as ' vayanattu Kulavan Theyyam'. District forest department not taken any strict action against the culprit.
Encroachers write to DFO for NOC in forest land.
Meanwhile heavy encroachment of forest land by migrants and locals in and around Panathady panchayath, Balanthod, Vannarkkayam, ottamala and near kottanchery reported. Now they written for NOC to DFO Kannur for forest land to make 'cultivate' land.

Conservationists Stage Dharna to Save the Environment

will a 'sathyagraha' save the forests and hills of kasaragod? It is doubtful because all the eco sensitive area of kasaragod district is under private land or encroached by landmafia. It is better to decalre a wildlife sanctuary (reserve forests and hills) which are under the control of kerala forest department.

Delay in declaration of Ranipuram Wildlife sanctuary is a huge setback for ecotourism projects in Kasaragod

Much acclaimed mini airport and golf course by BRDC lies only in paper. That is why major hotel groups like Leela already withdrawn their project. The negligence spread to Ranipuram ecotourism project. The best way to boost ecotourism is the declaration of a wildlife sanctuary sorounding reserved Forests of of Ranipuram hill station. Our MLA's did not raise any voice for studying and setting up of Ranipuram wildlife sanctuary. But karanataka forest department already made water holes for thirsty wild elephants and protecting wildlife corridor near Ranipuram. Kerala FD did not decalred Ranipuram as a wildlife sanctuary and wild elephants are visiting in summer only. So we must make arrangements for staying of wild elphants in the forests of kasaragod throughout the year by providing water holes and making an elephant corridor. Other wise encroachment, deforestation, granite quarrying and climate change may intensify in this part in future.

Forests of Kasaragod

The kasaragod district has two forest range falling under Kannur Forest Division namely kanhangad forest range and kasaragod forest range. Only 3 % of the geographical area of the district sustains forest but an important elephant corridor (Ranipuram WlS) and shola forest are found in the eastern border of the district. Governement notified 22% Barren land or 'waste land' is rich in wildlife such as fox, civets, jungle cat, peacock and medicinal plants. Unfortunately these 'waste land' are cheaply sold to private party. Malabar civet believed to be surviving in the forests of kasaragod. Parappa, malom, panathady and eleri reserve forest are part of kanhangad forest range. Karadukka, muliar and adoor are part of kasaragod forest range. Heavy hunting by local people reported in these reserve forest. Illegal tree felling and country liqour making reported in these forests.

Are malabar civets still surviving in the forests of Kasaragod?

The possibility of surviving of endangered malabar civets in the hilly areas of kasaragod is high owing its abundance of cashew crops, numerous sacred groves, rivers and large area of 'waste land'. Local people call this mamal as 'mala meru'. We hope that one of malabar civet with her feeding cub still wandering in the foot hills of westernghat... perhaps alone, hiding away from the hunters... sometimes killed while saving her dear cubs. Local hunters still active in the reserved forests of kasaragod both day and night. The ray of hope is still there in survival of malabar civet on this earth.....

We want Dam to create a Wildlife Sanctuary sorrounding its reservoir

There is no major Dam in the district and therefore no wildlife sanctuary? Ironically, most of the WLS of kerala located on the dam reservoir area. If any dam is proposed in the kasaragod district, will it create a new wildlife sanctuary? The answer is yes. The district has 11 rivers. The ecosystem of the district is already destroyed because of an intense deforestation and encroachment. This dam could be useful to the farmers and a permanent solution for watershortage problem of the district. Large portion of the rehabilated area is used for afforestation and greenary. A slight protest from the local people can easily divert dream projects to southern district as seen in the past and label kasaragod as a 'backward district'. Dams are future wetlands and new WLS / bird sanctuary will come sorounding the Munnamkadavu dam reservoir in Kasaragod.
Land & sand mafia protest against the 500 crore dream project of the District
If the dam protesters really want protect the biodiversity of the kasaragod, why do they support the hill high way , Bandadukka-sullya high way and pulingom -Bhagamandala road? Roads are great threats to the forests and more Resreved forests are being cut while making these roads. where is Kerala Sastra Sahithya Parishath who protests against the dam? why dont they protest against these roads which are really threat to the forest and wildlife of kasaragod district? Aren't they seen many illegal quarries operating at the edge of the reserve forests?

Man-Animal conflict in kasaragod district

Strangely the munnamkadavu dam protesters, most of them are migrants, who diverted their paddy field to other crops due to water shortage problem (because of lack of an Irrigation facility / major dam?). Forests encroachers who are living in the fringesa of the reserve forest, dont want any wild elephant, deer or wildpigs here in kasaragod because they are great threat to their crops. elephants are well protcted in karnataka and other part of kerala, but not in kasaragod. But most of these wild animals are endangered and protected under shedule-I of wild life act.

Recently extinct wild animals of kasaragod district

Many wild animals which were seen in hilly areas of kasaragod thought to be extinct because of delay in declararion of a wild life sanctauries by kerala forest department. Mamals such as tigers, lion tailed macaques, malabar civet, sloth bear, black panther, nilgiri tahr, musk deer and some other deer species are not reported for the past 30 years from now. It is high time to declare a wildlife sanctuary (reserve forests of the district) to protect remaining wildlife and forest in this part of the kerala state. MLAs / MP and local panchayath should actively discussed about notifying a wildlife sanctuary here. A strict vigilance from the police dept should be there to tackle illegal hunting which is taking place daily (during night) in the reserve forests of kasaragod-kanhangad range.

Ranipuram and Greater Talacaveri Biosphere reserve / NP

There are discussion going on for a Greater Talacauveri NP / Biosphere reserve comprising Talacaveri, Brahmagiri and pushpagiri wildlife sanctuary in Karnataka. Kerala Forest department should take action for inclusion of some reserve forests of kasaragod-kanhangad range under proposed biosphere / NP in oreder to better protection of the forest and its wildlife. Panathady RF and Ranipuram shola forest is contigous to Talacaveri wildlife snactuary in Karnataka and there fore it is very important to include in the new biosphere.
